      The School of Engineering Science was established in 1998 and is currently composed of the Department of Modern Mechanics, the Department of Precision Machinery & Instrumentation, the Department of Thermal Science & Energy Engineering, and the Department of Safety Science and Engineering.

      The Department of Modern Mechanics was established by the meritorious scientist academician TSIEN Hsue-shen, the father of modern Chinese rocketry, in 1958, and he himself was the department chair until 1978. In 1992, the department changed name as Dept. of Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering, but recovered the original name in 2007.

      The predecessor of Dept. of Thermal Science & Energy Engineering is Dept. of Engineering thermal Physics, which was established by distinguished scientist academician WU Zhonghua in 1958 and he was the dean of department until 1960. Later this department was repealed and merged into Dept. of Modern Mechanics as a specialty of Engineering Thermal Physics. In 1983, this specialty came back as Dept. of Engineering Thermal Physics and renamed as Dept. of Thermal Science & Energy Engineering in 1992.

      The Dept. of Precision Machinery & Instrumentation was established in 1978 based on the Basic Courses Teaching Section of Dept. of Modern Mechanics. The predecessor of this teaching section was the Machine Teaching Group of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Teaching Section, which was teaching the engineering basic courses for whole university. This teaching group merged into Dept. of Modern Mechanics in 1963.

      The Dept. of Safety Science & Engineering established in 2004 based on the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science at USTC is affiliated to SES. The Key Laboratory for Materials Behavior & Design of CAS was established in 2001 according to Mr. Tsien Hsue-shen’s suggestions.

      In the recent 5 decades, the related departments, subjects and specialties of engineering science have greatly changed, but these changes do not deviate from the advanced educational philosophy of USTC --- “to orient towards the front of science and technology, to attach importance to foundation, to educate research higher personnel with wide flexibility”.

      What is called “to attach importance to foundation and to educate research higher personnel with wide flexibility” means to strengthen foundation of mathematics and physics and foundation of engineering. But it has to be pointed, that requirements of engineering foundation from basic science subjects and subjects of engineering science are different: the former emphasizes particularly on basic engineering knowledge; the latter not only require students to master basic engineering knowledge, but also to possess considerable ability to treat engineering problems. After the establishment of SES, the related teaching laboratories originally belonged to different departments and subjects were integrated, and the engineering basic teaching experiment centre was established based on the financial support from the university. The centre has embodied more and more systematically the infiltration of the latest advanced technology into engineering foundation, sequentially boosted the development of the teaching of engineering foundation.

      What is called “to orient towards the front of science and technology” means the manner of taking elective courses for senior students let them join scientific research practice in related laboratories carrying out front research. In this way, students’ field of vision is opened, the scientific research fronts are contacted by students, the practical ability of students is exercised, therefore it is more propitious to educate students with characters of “blending theory and practice”

      Currently, SES has 5 specialties for undergraduates (see the homepage of departments), namely “Theoretical and Applied Mechanics”, “Mechanical Design and Manufacture, Machine Automation”, “Control Technology and Instrument”, “Thermal Energy and Power Engineering” and “Safety Science & Engineering”, in which the “Theoretical and Applied Mechanics” is one of the only two national science higher personnel education bases in China.

      Under the direction of advanced educational philosophy of USTC, under the direct direction from Chinese great masters of engineering science, SES of USTC has quickly formed bright educational characteristics, cultivated large numbers of excellent graduates welcomed and approved by the society. Most students graduated in sixties and seventies of last century entered institutes of CAS, or national defense departments and main industry and enterprises and became backbone, academic pioneers of these units. 6 graduates were elected as academician of CAS or CAE. 70% students graduated in eighties of last century entered famous universities or research institutes at home and abroad to continue their study, other 30% began their career. Most of them became pillars every walk of life, and even influential figures at home and abroad.

      Dept. of Modern Mechanics of USTC began to recruit postgraduates before the Cultural Revolution, but only after the end of Cultural Revolution, the postgraduate education and establishment of subjects developed at very fast speed. The integrated education system and system of objects covered undergraduate, postgraduate including master degree, doctorial degree education and postdoctoral stations were formed in mid eighties of last century. Thereafter, this system has expended gradually into rest engineering subjects of SES, furthermore, the system became stronger under the support from national 211 Project and 985 Project.

      Currently, the school has three grade 1 specialties for doctor degree, namely Mechanics, Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics and Instrument Science and Technology, in which the Mechanics is the national grade 1 key subject. The school has 8 grade 2 specialties for doctor degree, in which Fluid Mechanics and Solid Mechanics are national key subjects, Engineering Thermal Physics and Precision Instrument are provincial key subjects. The school has also 2 postdoctoral stations, namely Mechanics and Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics, respectively.

      Synchronized with the development of subjects, the scientific research of related subjects in the School of Engineering Science has been developed continually, has accumulated abundant foundation and obtained plentiful and substantial productions. According to incomplete statistics, the school has undertaken more than 140 national natural sciences fund projects since 2000 A.D., including key fund project and national fund project for Distinguished Young Scholars, more than 40 high-tech projects from national 863 Program and 973 Program, 1 nation-level large-scale scientific project (focal plane fiber orientation of Lamost) and more than 300 other different kinds of research projects. The related subjects have successively obtained 3 national research awards and more than 40 awards from Chinese Academy of Sciences and different provinces or ministries since 1978.
