      Founded in 1998, the University of Science and Technology of China consists of the then departments of mechanics and mechanical engineering, precision machinery and precision instruments, and thermal science and Energy Engineering. Academician Wu Xiaoping and academician Cui Erjie have served as the dean of the College, and the current Dean is academician Du Shanyi. The Department of mechanics and mechanical engineering was originally called the Department of Mechanics and mechanical engineering, founded in 1958 by the distinguished scientist academician Qian Xuesen, and was its chairman until 1978; it was renamed the Department of modern mechanics in 1961 and the Department of mechanics and mechanical engineering in 1992, he was reinstated to the department of modern mechanics in 2007. The Department of Thermal Science and Energy Engineering, formerly the Department of physical thermal engineering, was founded in 1958 by academician Wu Zhonghua, who was the first head of the department. In 1960, it was renamed the Department of engineering thermal physics, in 1961, the Department of modern mechanics was merged with the Department of mechanics and mechanical engineering to form the Department of modern mechanics; in 1983, the Department of Engineering Thermophysics was restored, and academician Wu Zhonghua continued to serve as head of the department until 1984 and was renamed the Department of Thermal Science and Energy Engineering in 1992. The Department of precision machinery and precision instruments was founded in 1978 on the basis of the Department of modern mechanics The former is the mechanical teaching and Research Group of the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Department established in 1958, which was merged into the department of modern mechanics in 1963. In 2004, the Department of Safety Science and Engineering was established by the state key laboratory of fire science, affiliated to the College of Engineering Science The Chinese Academy of Sciences, set up in 2001 at the initiative of Mr. Qian Xuesen, is also part of the School of Engineering Sciences.

       Engineering Science, also known as technical Science, is at the applied Science level, a bridge between natural Science and Engineering. When hkust was founded, many of its departments were located in the engineering sciences, and these departments were different from the traditional engineering departments. The former is oriented to engineering science, mainly cultivating research-oriented talents to solve scientific problems in engineering, while the latter is directly oriented to engineering technology, mainly cultivating engineering talents. In fact, the establishment of many engineering science departments is one of the advanced educational IDEAS OF HKUST —— -- The combination of science and technology, and the combination of science and engineering. The progress of modern science and technology, especially the rapid development of high and new technology, has injected new vitality into the development of engineering science, and also put forward new challenges to engineering science. It is in this context that the College of Engineering Sciences was established to integrate resources and promote interdisciplinary integration, especially between engineering science and high technology.

      In recent years, a lot of changes have taken place in the related departments of Engineering Science and their professional settings, however, these changes did not deviate from another advanced thought of running a University of science and technology —— -- cultivating research-oriented scientific and technological talents with heavy foundation and wide scope. The so-called “emphasis on foundation, wide-bore” means to attach importance to mathematical foundation and Engineering Foundation, but the fundamental science (science) and engineering science departments require different degrees of Engineering Foundation, the latter requires not only the basic knowledge of engineering, but also the ability of engineering technology. After the establishment of the College of Engineering Science, the Teaching Laboratory of the relevant departments was integrated, and the Engineering Foundation Experimental Teaching Center was established with the full use of the school’s investment. The center more and more systematically reflects the infiltration of high and new technologies into the Engineering Foundation, therefore, it promotes the development of Engineering Foundation teaching. The so-called “technology-oriented frontier” refers to the way that senior students take elective courses, as well as to the relevant cutting-edge Research Laboratories (the Chinese Academy of Sciences or our school) to participate in a certain scientific research practice; this will not only broaden students’ horizons, contact with the forefront of science and technology, and can exercise students’ practical work ability, more conducive to cultivating students’“truth and reality” character. At present, the College of Engineering Science has 5 undergraduate programs (see introduction of the related departments) , that is, theoretical and applied mechanics, mechanical design and manufacture and automation, measurement and control technology and instruments, energy and power engineering and safety science and engineering. The specialty of theoretical and applied mechanics is one of the only two training bases for science and mechanics talents in China. Under the guidance of many advanced school-running ideas of HKUST, and under the direct guidance of China’s first generation of engineering science masters, the distinct school-running features of the Department of Engineering Science of HKUST were quickly formed, we have trained a large number of excellent undergraduates who are accepted and welcomed by the society. Those who graduated in the 1960s and 1970s mainly went to the relevant institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the leading departments of national defense and the main industries and institutions of the country, and became the backbone, academic or technical leaders or leaders of these units, he made significant contributions to the cutting-edge cause of national defense; six graduates were elected as academicians of the two academies. After the 1980s, more than 70% of the graduates went to famous universities and research institutions at home and abroad for further study. The rest took part in work directly. They became pillars of all walks of life, and even influential figures at home and abroad. Under the guidance of the Chinese Academy of Sciences policy of “running a school by the whole college and combining all departments, ” , the College of Engineering Science and the Institute of Mechanics have established the “Qian Xuesen mechanics talent class” , the “Wu Zhonghua talent class” with the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, the “precision optics, mechanical, electrical and Environmental Science and technology talent class” with the Anhui Institute of optics and Mechanical Engineering, and the “new energy science and technology talent class” with the Guangzhou Institute of Energy, to focus the high quality resources of schools and Chinese Academy of Sciences on the strategic needs of the country, to explore new models of innovative personnel training, dedicated to the training of high-level top talent in the field of science and engineering.

      Before the Cultural Revolution, the Department of modern mechanics of hkust began to recruit graduate students. After the Cultural Revolution, graduate education and discipline construction developed rapidly. In the Mid-1980s, a complete training system and discipline system was formed, which included undergraduate students, postdoctoral students and postdoctoral students. Since then, the system has gradually expanded to other engineering disciplines at the college, and has grown even stronger with the support of the state “Project 211” and “Project 985” . Mechanics is a first-class subject, safety science and engineering is a National Key Disciplines subject, instrument science and technology is a provincial National Key Disciplines subject, power engineering and engineering thermal physics are provincial key subjects; Mechanics, instrument science and technology, power engineering and engineering thermophysics are the first-class disciplines, and mechanical engineering is the first-class disciplines The college also has 3 postdoctoral stations in mechanics, instrumental science and technology, power engineering and engineering thermophysics.

      At the same time of discipline construction, the scientific research work of related disciplines in the College of Engineering Science of Hkust is also developing continuously, which has accumulated solid foundation and achieved fruitful results. According to incomplete statistics, since 2000, it has undertaken more than 421 national natural science funds (including key funds and outstanding youth funds) and more than 75 national high-tech projects such as 863 and 973, there are 1 National Large Science Project (focal plane optical fiber positioning part of Lamost) , 75 projects of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 45 projects of Ministry of Education and 93 projects of Anhui Province. More than 800 other kinds of scientific research projects. Related disciplines have been awarded 3 state-level research achievements, more than 40 Chinese Academy of Sciences and provincial ministerial-level research achievements. At present, there are several research platforms, such as the key laboratory of material mechanics behavior and design of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the key laboratory of biomass and clean energy.

      Under the care and training of the first generation of Engineering Science Masters and other famous scientists in China, and under the influence of the excellent school ethos of hkust, the Faculty of Engineering Science at Hkust has grown rapidly, many of them have become famous experts in the academic and educational circles at home and abroad. In the past ten years, they have absorbed a large number of excellent talents to fill the teaching posts (including introducing from abroad) , thus forming a powerful teaching staff. The college has 208 faculty members and 60 permanent-term researchers (including 6 special Ren Zhenggao, 23 special deputy researchers and 31 post-doctoral fellows) . At present, there are 58 in-service professors and 50 associate professors, including five academicians of the two academies and one scholar from the Yangtze River, six recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, seven recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Fund and 26 recipients of the national high-level talent program. In addition, the College of Engineering Science has a strong technical support team based on technical personnel.

      The College of Engineering Sciences has always attached importance to international academic exchanges and encouraged teachers to actively participate in international conferences, and with the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Australia and other countries and Hong Kong and Taiwan academic institutions to establish a long-term cooperative research and talent exchange relations, promoting the overall development of the College of Engineering Sciences.
